Posted on December 8, 2018December 8, 2018 by kc2519

Recent posts have used RateBeer API data to analyze ratings and reviews for Bell’s Two Hearted Ale, one of the benchmarks for the IPA (India Pale Ale) category. Our analyses have been done using Exploratory, a powerful front end tool based on R, an open source analysis framework. We’ll continue this series today, with an…

Posted on November 30, 2018December 5, 2018 by kc2519

In this entry in our informal series tracking data from the RateBeer API, we’ll take a look at using Exploratory for some simple text analysis. Exploratory Shout-Out

Posted on November 28, 2018 by kc2519

In previous posts, I used Exploratory, the powerful front end for R, to start analyzing beer data from the RateBeer API. This week’s Exploratory newsletter links to my two recent posts, which was really nice to see. Future posts will continue to use Exploratory to dive into the data; it’s a great tool already, and…

I’ve already considered the likes of Gephi, sigma.js, and Mapbox for network and geographic visuals. None of these tools can be used to create more conventional charts, however. For this capability,…

Here’s a chart detailing approximate colors for 175 beer styles. A few of these are educated guesses, while many more come from the Brewer’s Friend site or are created using a combination of SRM ranges and the Brewer’s Friend chart. All done with some simple Excel formulas. Enjoy!

Yet another chapter in teaching an old dog new tricks, as I learn to query results using the GraphiQL language for the RateBeer API. For those not familiar with RateBeer.com, it is a major site providing a wealth of information about beers and breweries, powered by a large user community. The API provides a window…

This is a simple test using Michigan breweries that can be found in the BreweryDB API. Eventually, we’ll have more substantial maps using Mapbox and possibly Carto, that will provide a great deal of information about breweries and their specific beers.

Using SRM Colors by Beer Style

Posted on November 19, 2018November 19, 2018 by kc2519

In an effort to keep the site as visually authentic as possible, I have elected to use beer-derived colors for both the site design and the forthcoming visualizations. These colors are based on the SRM (Standard Reference Method) scale used in the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), as shared at the Brewer’s Friend website. The…
